The Commissioner of the Northwest Territories is the Canadian federal government’s representative in Northwest Territories (NWT) and the territory's Chief Executive Officer.
Similar to a Lieutenant-Governor, the Commissioner swears in the Members of the Legislative Assembly, swears in members of the Executive Council, provides assent for bills, opens sessions of the Legislative Assembly, and signs other government documents such as Order-in-Council.

In 1876, the District of Keewatin, at the centre of the territory, was separated from it.
Quebec was also extended, in 1898, and Yukon was made a separate territory in the same year to deal with the Klondike Gold Rush, and remove the NWT government from administering the sudden boom of population, economic activity and influx of non-Canadians.
The Commissioner of NWT is the chief executive and is appointed by the federal Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development.

From 1905 to 1980, the head of government of the NWT was a commissioner appointed by the Prime Minister.
