This is a list of the number one hits in the UK Singles Chart, from its inception in 1952 to the present.
Note: this list is different from that shown in the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles, which uses the Record Retailer chart from 1960 onwards.

The total quantity of hits and weeks at number one for each artist includes all the details for their hits as members of groups, solo artists and parts of duets whether they are with one other artist or many.
Between 1996-8, some singles which charted only on the airplay chart and were not available as retail purchased products, are listed as hits and six of them are actually listed as number ones.
In the number one listings sections, particularly affecting the US albums between 1950-1953 and 1959-1963, the total weeks at no.1 refers to the total number of weeks spent at the top, whether or not the run was interrupted (as most were).

The band have just added a further date to their UK tour at London Scala on 2 March after selling out their show in the capital the previous night.

Most of the bands were 1 or no hit wonders, obviouslly blending the Stooges and The NY Dolls with Hollywood's indigenous glam rock.
To keep a short story short, "Street Punk" and "Oi" are cousin terms used to describe the 2nd (and 3rd, 20th, and 86th) generation UK punk bands that formed in the wake of The Sex Pistols and The Clash.

1 of "The Singles" is hardly an all encompassing look at David Bowie's early work, but it's still a great set of tunes for someone that's unfamiliar with Ziggy/Aladdin Sane era David and looking for a good place to start.
Although this not a comprehensive collection of Bowie's singles (the novelty UK hit The Laughing Gnome is missing, for example), the album does contain the crème de la crème of his early work, from 1969's Space Oddity to 1977's Sound And Vision.
Rebel Rebel and Diamond Dogs are further tight rock numbers with catchy hooks, whilst Fame and Young Americans are impressive examples of his plastic soul style in the mid 1970s.
