Rivers are part of our lives and our heritage.
The objectives of the program are to give national recognition to Canada's outstanding RIVERS, and to ensure long-term management and conservation of their natural, cultural and recreational values.
A fundamental principle of the CHRS is that the nomination and management of Canadian heritage rivers remains with the government - the provincial governments in the south, the territorial and federal governments jointly in the north, and the federal government in NATIONAL PARKS and other federal lands.

The Cowichan River flows 47 km from its headwaters at Cowichan Lake, in the heart of the Vancouver Island Ranges, to its estuary at Cowichan Bay on the east coast of Vancouver Island.
Rivers are pre-screened to assess in a preliminary manner, their suitability for becoming a Canadian Heritage River, including an assessment of the public support for their inclusion in the system.

Nunavut is a member of the Canadian Parks Council (CPC) which was established in 1961 as a means of improving dialogue on resources management and the benefits of improved cooperation in four common areas: protection, heritage appreciation, outdoor recreation, and tourism and the economy.
Nunavut Tourism, Nunavut's tourism agency, is responsible for identifying and building tourism opportunities in Nunavut; working with industry, communities, businesses, and others to develop tourism products; promote Nunavut nationally and internationally; and provide training to ensure quality tourism experiences in Nunavut.

Rivers in Nunavut are also very cold and must be treated with additional caution when crossing.
Cross major rivers and streams early in the day, especially those that are glacier fed. Water levels tend to be lowest early in the morning when the sun is weakest.
River or stream sections on flat ground with several branches tend to be shallower than single, main channels.
