I 2) tells the story that Darius, having seen at Sardis a beautiful Paionian woman carrying a pitcher on her head, leading a horse to drink, and spinning flax, all at the same time, inquired who she was.
Having been informed that she was a Paionian, he sent instructions to Megabyzus, commander in Thrace, to deport two tribes of the nation without delay to Asia.

In 280 BC the Gallic invaders under Brennus ravaged the land of the Paionians, who, being further hard pressed by the Dardani, had no alternative but to join the Macedonians, but the Paionians and Macedonians were defeated.

 I/63 Paionian (512-284 BC)
The Paionians (Paeonians) were a loose collection of tribes who settled in the central Balkans in the valleys of the rivers Struma, Vardar and Bistricia around 4000-3500 BC (an area corresponding roughly with modern Macedonia and Serbia).
The first 100 years of the list represents a time of great tribal princes, such as Teutaos, Langarus and Dyplaios of the Agrianians, Nicharchos, Symon and Bastareios, which are known to use in part through early coinage.
From figures depicted on coinage, Paionian cavalry wore a squarenecked tunic with elbow-length sleeves, an Attic-style helmet with crest, a long spear held under arm, and a sword on a baldric.

List dates: The current list starts in 320 BC for no good reason other than all the Successor lists start then; it also covers only Lysimachos.
Contrary to the current list's statement, Lysimachos was not Alexander's Thracian governor when he died, he was appointed to this position after his death - and had to fight to make the title a reality.
List scale: Memnon's army is reported as being large by Diodoros, but with no figures given; it included allied Thracians; Zopyrion's as 30000 strong (by Justin, who tends to exaggeration, yet reports in the same passage that Cyrus had just 20000 men when defeated by the Skythians, which is probably under-reporting).

The Paionians when they heard that their cities were in the hands of the enemy, at once dispersed, each tribe to its own place of abode, and proceeded to deliver themselves up to the Persians.
So then those of the Paionians who had been conquered were being brought to Asia: and Megabazos meanwhile, after he had conquered the Paionians, sent as envoys to Macedonia seven Persians, who after himself were the men of most repute in the army.
Having come to the coast the Paionians crossed over thence to Chios, and when they were already in Chios there arrived in their track a large body of Persian horsemen pursuing the Paionians.

The Laeaeans were a Paionian tribe that lived adjacent to the Agrianes, another Paionian tribe, along the upper course of the Strymon river, at the western edge of Thrace.
They were not incorporated into the Odrysian state or the Paionian state, remaining an independent tribe outside the borders of those kingdoms.
The Laeaeans, along with the Agrianes, the Thracian Dii, and other tribes, joined Sitalkes in his (unsuccesful) campaign against Perdiccas II of Macedon.

It is conjectured that the Amazons were originally the temple-servants and priestesses (hierodulae) of this goddess; and that the removal of the breast corresponded with the self-mutilation of the god Attis and the galli, Roman priests of Cybele.
Another theory is that, as the knowledge of geography extended, travellers brought back reports of tribes ruled entirely by women, who carried out the duties which elsewhere were regarded as peculiar to man, in whom alone the rights of nobility and inheritance were vested, and who had the supreme control of affairs.

The Aryan tribes in the Indian subcontinent called their land Aaryaa varta or "Aryan land", while ancient Persians named their realm Airyanem Vaejah, or "Aryan land", and today the word survives as Iran.
It has been suggested since the mid 19th century that certain Aryan tribes migrated into India, around 1800 BC-1500 BC, possibly waging war against the declining Indus Valley Civilization.
