The chairman of the Latvian Union Party was the thirteenth candidate to be removed from a list for violations of this Clause [Annex 8].
The list was placed in the voting envelope, which was sealed and given to the a member of the polling commission, who then inserted it into the ballot box in the presence of the voter.

Noncitizens may join and form political parties, but there must be at least 200 citizens in the party, and at least half of the total membership must be citizens (see Section 3).
Latvia was primarily a country of origin and transit for trafficked victims rather than a destination, although no exact statistics were available.

Two political parties specifically defend the interests of the Russian speakers or more widely speaking, the Slavs: For Human Rights in a United Latvia (PVTCL), led by MEP Tatjana Zdanoka and Jakovs Pliners, and the Harmony Centre (SC), successor to the Communist Party of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Latvia led by Nils Usakovs.
At the other end of the political scale the Harmony Centre is fighting for the defence of the diversity of the population and the free choice on the part of each citizen of the language in which his/her children will be educated.
Most political parties put detailed measures forward in their electoral programmes for the fight against this problem.

Considering Latvia's geographic location and the temperament of its citizens, it would seem that the political system of that country should be similar to Canada's.
But their political influence is undermined by serious internal disputes, which some analysts qualify as the economic war to the last man. Such repressive state institutions as the Prosecutor's Office and KNAB (corruption prevention bureau) are involved in the fight.
But this is both the gain and the handicap of the ZZS list, which cannot claim a position in the center of the political spectrum, and is gradually shifting to the more radical side.

Political party representatives from Southern Africa (Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zambia) met 14-15 April in Johannesburg, South Africa.
They raised issues such as models and norms for fair public financing of political parties, access to media during election campaigns, the technical capacity of parties to do their job in communicating with members and the general public, and developing policies and selecting candidates.
The April events were part of a series of dialogue workshops across the world for researchers and political party representatives to discuss the challenges that political parties face in their internal functioning and in legal and contextual frameworks.

Politics of Latvia takes place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic, whereby the Prime Minister is the head of government, and of a pluriform multi-party system.
In autumn 1991 Latvia reimplemented significant portions of its 1922 constitution and in spring 1993 the government took a census to determine eligibility for citizenship.
Latvia has no territorial claims towards Russia, but demands an acknowledgement from Russia of the annexation of the small part of the Abrene region, since this land was previously part of Latvia and was detached from it by the Soviet Union.

Latvia is a parliamentary democracy, having regained its independence in 1991 after forced annexation and more than 50 years of occupation by the Soviet Union.
Latvia usually attempts to return such asylum seekers to the country from which they entered, but neighboring countries are generally willing to accept only their own citizens or legal residents.
While Latvia was able to negotiate readmission agreements with its Baltic neighbors and some Nordic countries, it was particularly hampered by the lack of similar agreements with Russia and Belarus.

Several international organizations had strongly urged Latvia to change the laws; however, the main demand came from NATO, in February, when Secretary-General George Robertson warned parliamentarians about the risk of not being invited to join the alliance this fall if the requirement, which does not conform with NATO's political standards, was not abolished.
On March 20, during a conference devoted to cooperation between Latvia and the OSCE, Gerard Stoudmann, director of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, stated that it would be logical to make Russian an official language in Latvia, adding that the de facto situation should be codified into law.
After the auction, Ainars Slesers, former minister of economy and an MP from Latvia's First Party, questioned how authentic the privatization actually was, given that the state still holds a 43.62 percent stake in Ventspils Nafta, and he asked the prime minister to dismiss Minister of Economy Aigars Kalvitis.

The 5% barrier proved to be an insurmountable obstacle to the Latvian Social Democrats, who promised to change the political system, the populists from Yuri Zhuravlev's Dzimtene (homeland) list, led by V. Putin (the Russian president's namesake), and numerous extreme radical and relatively small national fronts and associations.
The victory belonged to three parties, which had been in the minority prior to the elections: the People's Party and two party coalitions - the Greens and the Farmers (ZZS), and the Right-Wing Party with the Latvian Way (Latvijas Cels).
Once an influential political movement, which claimed the right to represent unilaterally the interests of all Russian speakers in Latvia, it had lost many popular politicians from the People's Harmony Party (Tautas Saskanas Partija) and the Socialist Party, and eventually was denied confidence by a considerable part of its voters.

 New car registration in Latvia up 50 percent in Jan-Sep
During the first nine months of this year, registration of new cars in Latvia soared by 5,905 cars or 50 percent from the same period a year ago to 17,660 new passenger cars, the Latvian Authorized Car Dealers Association reported.
Toyotas that were made in 2005 and 2006 still led the registration of new cars in Latvia with 2,100 new Toyota cars registered during January-September.
Volkswagen was the runner-up with 1,584 new cars, and Hyundai was third with 1,555 new cars registered in Latvia during the first nine months of this year.

This government depends on the so-called leftist parties, and for them it's also very critical since they can alienate their voters.
