After his presidency, he was appointed to a five-year term as professor-at-large at Brown University's Watson Institute for International Studies, beginning in 2003.

In 1877, President MacMahon showed that his office was constitutionally significant when he dismissed the then prime minister before calling new elections, in the hope of achieving a royalist majority to restore the monarchy.
President is also used as a title in a number of non-governmental circumstances.

On October 1965, President Castello Branco claimed that the extraordinary powers of the Supreme Command of the Revolution had devolved upon the presidential office, and alleged that it was necessary to preserve the so called Revolutionary process by means of further changes to the country´s institutional framework.
President Figueiredo also signed the Law of Amnisty, that allowed for the return of many people who were banished from the country, made void several sanctions imposed by the regime and pardoned all offenses commited either by members of the regime or by its opposers, including armed groups.

Brazil is a key player in hemispheric efforts to negotiate an FTAA by 2005, and hosted the May 1997 FTAA Trade Ministerial in Belo Horizonte.
His son declared Brazil's independence on September 7, 1822, and became emperor with the title of Dom Pedro I. His son, Dom Pedro II, ruled from 1831 to 1889, when a federal republic was established in a coup by Deodoro da Fonseca, marshal of the army.
The elevation of Brazil, in 1815, from the status of a colony to that of a United Kingdom with Portugal may be seen as an example.

The long list includes two serving presidents facing charges, as well as former leaders who have served time in prison, are now behind bars, are under prosecution, or are the target of suspicions and about to be tried.
Another former president who may soon be tried is Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada in Bolivia, who was forced to resign in October 2003 by a month-long popular revolt triggered by plans to export natural gas to the United States and Mexico under conditions that were opposed by the public.
In the Caribbean, former Haitian president Jean Bertrand Aristide, whose term was cut short in February in the midst of looting and violence and U.S. intervention, is accused by opposition groups of corruption and political violence.
