The President of Iraq is Iraq's head of state.
Iraq became a republic after the overthrow of the monarchy in 1958.
In April 2006, after the ratification of the new Iraqi Constitution in 2005, transitional President Jalal Talabani was elected as President of the Republic of Iraq under the new Constitution, and thus became the first President of the permanent Government established by the new constitutional order.

President Jalal Talabani and his two vice presidents signed off on the names before they were submitted to the 275-member National Assembly for a vote.
