The European Central Bank (ECB) in Frankfurt am Main, Germany is the central bank of the eurozone, in charge of monetary policy for the 12 countries that use the euro currency.
The first president of the ECB was Wim Duisenberg, the former president of De Nederlandsche Bank, the Dutch national bank, and former finance minister of The Netherlands.
The European System of Central Banks (ESCB) is comprised of the European Central Bank (ECB), and the national central banks of the 25 member-states of the European Union.

The debating chamber, the 'hemicycle' of the European Parliament in Brussels.
The President of the European Commission is chosen by the European Council, but must be approved by Parliament before she or he can assume office.
Although Brussels is generally treated as the 'capital' of the European Union, and the two institutions of the EU's executive, the European Commission and the Council of Ministers, both have their seats there, a protocol attached to the Treaty of Amsterdam requires that the European Parliament have monthly sessions in Strasbourg.

William C. Banks is professor of public administration and law, and director of the Institute for National Security and Counterterrorism.
Banks received a J.D. in 1974 and an M.A. in 1982 from the University of Denver.
