President Joseph Kabila's cabinet and office staff was geographically and ethnically diverse but a significant amount of political influence remains in the hands of individuals (both inside and outside the Government) from the Luba Katangan ethnic group of the president's father, former president Laurent Kabila.
On 30 June 2003 President Kabila announced the composition of the Government of National Unity and transition in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Congo's five-year war is officially over and a transitional government is trying to shepherd the vast African nation to elections next year, but the peace process has come to a halt, largely because of the continued presence of armed groups in the east.

President Laurent Kabila of Congo and the representatives of five nations involved in the conflict signed the accord on July 10, but the two main rebel groups did not sign because of a leadership dispute in the second rebel group, the Congolese Rally for Democracy.
Presided over by an independent mediator, such a dialogue may prove unkind to Kabila, but because Lusaka included no provision for implementing its outcome, the result is almost certain to leave his government in power.
President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa, whose government brokered the agreement, said bringing peace to one of Africa's prominent trouble spots is symbolically important to a continent where low-level civil wars continue in several countries.

The country was formerly called Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zaire, then again Democratic Republic of Congo and had a history of colonialists and tyrants trying to volatile the country's vast natural resources.
Laurent-Désiré Kabila declared himself president on May 17 and later re-named the country Democratic Republic of Congo, introduced a new flag (which was strangely enough similar to the one of the Congo Free State), a new national anthem and the Congolese Franc that replaced the heavily inflated Zaire.
First President Kabila was extremely popular while he was fighting the follows of the Mobutu-regime, but then he started restrictions on civil liberties, free speech and political activity, angered investors, and lost much of his initial popularity.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is nominally a highly centralized republic with extensive powers vested in President Joseph Kabila, head of a national Transitional Government, which was formed in June 2003 and is composed of former belligerent factions, including representatives from the former government, former rebel groups, civil society, and the political opposition.
President Kabila came to power in 2001 after the assassination of his father, Laurent Desire Kabila.
There are four vice presidents: two from the main former rebel groups, one from the political opposition, and one from Kabila's own political "family." The bicameral Parliament, as established under the Transitional Constitution, includes members from these groups, civil society and smaller, former rebel movements.
