EN World - Morrus' D&D / d20 News & Reviews Site - Characters - DuskBlades and Prestige Classes
Prestige classes are slowly doing the opposite of what they were intended to do.
I like Monks, Druids and (now) Duskblades because the class works well and the only reason to prestige class is to alter focus as opposed to build up power and focus.
Despite some of the nebulous verbage in the class description, I think this is one the best new concepts/classes they've come up with in a long time.

The prestige classes in the Dungeon Master's Guide were the first (and, to date, the only) prestige classes considered part of the core rules for the game.
Unlike prestige classes from almost all other supplemental source books, these nine classes have been included in the SRD with the addition of the rules for epic levels.

Some classes may require a certain number of ranks in one or more skills, others may require the ability to cast arcane or divine spells.
At level 10, level advancement in a prestige class stops until the character's total level (the sum of all their class levels) is 20 or higher.
Once this threshold is crossed, the character may advance to level 11 and higher with his or her prestige class.

 SRD - Prestige Classes
Unlike the basic classes, characters must meet Requirements before they can take their first level of a prestige class.
If a character does not meet the Requirements for a prestige class before that first step, that character cannot take the first level of that prestige class.
For a character with levels in only one class, class level and character level are the same.

Prestige classes are an interesting way to add spice to your character.
And there are so many different prestige classes, from so many different sources, that it is difficult to decide.
This is even without mentioning the fact that each prestige class requires some sort of rationale for its existence in the DM's world, and sadly it just might not fit or it might not be balanced.

Prestige class - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In its original form and in the first edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons rules — in which the term "prestige class" was not used — subclasses often required a character to have higher ability scores or specific alignments as opposed to those allowed in the standard classes.
In addition, the dual-class and multi-class rules, which allowed a character to change classes while retaining some of the abilities of the former class, or to pursue multiple classes simultaneously, were streamlined from the rather awkward and limiting form they took in the first edition rules.
The role-play effect in the game is not so much that of changing careers (as with dual classing) or combining multiple classes, but more like achieving recognition in the character's original class or classes and being allowed to join an exclusive brotherhood of similarly skilled individuals.

Prestige classes marked with an asterisk (*) can only be gained by adventuring away from Ixinos itself; the Amazon homeland does not offer the necessary training to obtain levels in them.

 Using Spelljammer Kits in 3e
Though prestige classes and kits appear similar at first glance, lending themselves to a one-for-one conversion, they actually have a few important differences.
For instance, prestige classes are used primarily to define sets of capabilities that are gained once a character is high enough level to meet the requirements.
Unlike prestige classes, characters need to start out with the kit, and will probably keep it throughout their carriers.

Third, too many of the prestige classes are unbalanced and/or just plain silly, attempting to do with abilities and feats and powers what should be accomplished by way of simply applying the basic character classes in a certain direction.
