The ancient nation of Iran was historically known to the West as Persia until March 21, 1935.
In 1951, Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh, a nationalist, received the vote required from the parliament to nationalize the British-owned oil industry, in a situation known as the Abadan Crisis.
Mossadegh was arrested and a new prime minister was appointed.

Iran underwent something of a revival under the Safavid dynasty (1502-1736), the most prominent figure of which was Shah Abbas, who expelled the Uzbeks and Ottomans from Persia.
Iran now has a variety of groups engaged in political activity; some are oriented along ideological lines or based on an identity group, others are more akin to professional political parties seeking members and recommending candidates for office.
Iran defended itself and demanded the withdrawal of Iraqi troops from Iranian territory and the return to the status quo ante for the Shatt al-Arab as established under the 1975 Algiers Agreement signed by Iraq and Iran.

A statement signed by the British lawyers said that the promotion of freedom and democracy in Iran faced a major obstacle which was the listing of the MeK as a proscribed group.
The MeK was listed as a terrorist organisation by the European Union in mid-2002, in what the EU’s then-Spanish leadership called “a goodwill gesture to Tehran”.
While urging Home Secretary Charles Clarke to de-proscribe the MeK, the lawyers called on the government to distance itself from Iran’s hard-line regime, which they said represented a “direct threat to British interests”, and instead side with the “millions of Iranians and their Resistance movement who seek peace, freedom and a secular democracy in Iran”.
