Puranas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sage Vyasa is credited with compilation of Puranas from age Yuga to age, and for the current age, he has been identified and named Krishna Dvaipayana, the son of sage Parashara.
According to the Matsya Purana (a Tamasika Purana itself), the eighteen Puranas are divided into three groups of six according to gunas of people they are primarily meant for.
Puranas are named after the three main forms of Brahman: Brahma, the Creator; Vishnu, the Protector of Life and Humanity; and Shiva, the Destroyer.

Manas: Religious texts of India, Puranas
Around the time when the puranas first began to be composed, the belief in particular deities had become established as one of the principal marks of the Hindu faith, and to some degree the puranas can be described as a form of sectarian literature.
Among these puranas, the Vishnu Purana and the Bhagavata Purana (also known as the Bhagavatam) are, with respect to their standing as works of devotional literature, preeminent; and the Bhagavata Purana is even the supreme work of Krishna devotional literature.
The Puranas are works that most eminently represent the deep mythic structuring of Indian civilization, and they are properly viewed as expanding upon, modifying, and transforming the orthodox Brahminism of the Vedas, principally by the introduction of the idea of bhakti or devotion.

Puranas of Hinduism to be researched as History with an open mind
Vishnu purANa,  considered as the chief authority almost like the Sruti by the followers of viSishTAdvaita philosophy,  was written by Parasara, Vyasa's father.
History for the modern mind is what is available  through archeological research and due to the fashions set by the western traditions, any research of ancient literature  that points to hoary periods several millenia before the common historical era, is looked at with disbelief and therefore not pursued to its logical conclusion.
purANas have the  single objective of talking only about those events and lives of the past which ennoble you and enable  you to a better man. Since history always repeats itself, the purpose of history should  be to learn the lessons of history and do better in the future.

Puranas and History from the Chapter "Puranas", in Hindu Dharma : kamakoti.org:
It is not my purpose to say that you should not read history, but I should like to mention that the puranas are also history and that our youngsters have a great deal to learn from them, a great deal that will help in moulding their conduct and character.
The purpose of the Puranas is not to give [as history does] a chronological account of kings or their quarrels without imparting lessons on good and evil.
The emphasis in the Puranas is on dharma and, incidently, they also deal, in a subsidiary manner, with the ruling dynasties, with holy men as well as with ordinary folk.
