portland imc - 2005.04.19 - Students Rise Again in Québec
The strike began February 23 with a walkout by 30,000 CEGEP and University students, organized by the most radical of the three major student associations, CASSÉÉ (a coalition of the Association for Student Union Solidarity--ASSÉÉ--and unaffiliated student groups).
The motivating grievance was a drastic cut in student stipends from the Quebec government, announced by the Liberal Minister of Education--some $103 million (Canadian dollars--U.S. equivalent about $80 million)--per year, beginning with this academic year's promised amount.
Tuition in Quebec is already the lowest in Canada--which is, of course, lower than almost all public institutions in the United States.

One major difference about the feeling about the strike between the one that have lived it (Quebec students, mainly francophones) and the rest of the students (Quebec anglophones students and the rest of the student movement in Canada) is about the kind of victory we had.
While most of the striking students now are really bitter about the result of the strike (a cut of 133M$CDN and the avoidance of a broader reflexion), organizations that have been slightly or not at all involved in the campaign claim that it is a complete victory or at least a major victory.
That said, it means that the Quebec students are not different by nature to the rest of the students, it is just a matter of organization.
