In 1956, the RAF also started using Twin Pioneer light observation aircraft for monitoring the movements of the rebels, and in 1957 four Meteor FR.Mk.9 reconnaissance fighters were stationed at Khormaksar, while old Lincolns were replaced by Shackletons, which flew their first combat sorties against the dissidents at Ghaniyah.
Under the given circumstances the RAF in Aden was further reinforced, foremost by Hunter FR.Mk.10 reconnaissance-fighters and Belvedere transports of the No. 26 Sqn, both of which were based in Khormaksar, which was meanwhile one of the busiest airfields world-wide.
The RAF Khormaksar was now so overloaded (one has to bear in mind, that here also all the British aircraft landed which were underway to the Persian Gulf, Indian Ocean, and the Far East), that another main base had to be built, at Beihan.

In 1964, when the RAF Handling Squadron at Boscombe Down applied for a standard (presumably under the 25- year rule), it was rejected on the grounds that standards were only presented to operational squadrons, that is, those engaged with the enemy (AIR 2/16314).

Immediately after this accident my next station was RAF St Mawgan and coincidentally I and Stewart Tucker had three and a half years on 201 squadron servicing and flying many hours in them as a member of the servicing crew wherever the squadron was despatched to, on detachment or exercise.
The RAF had this story under wraps for 30 years, I was one of those survivors and was officially warned off on at least 3 separate occasions in making representations to my superiors during the remainder of my RAF career under the Queens Regulations 'Conduct Prejudice' Act.
The fact that no serious accident occurred during the occupation of Gan by the RAF is a great tribute not only to the efficiency of the services provided by the station, but also to the standards of flying by the RAF crews who passed through.

Both days were spent getting ready for my trip: compiling lists of last minute things to buy or find, doing some boxes for the office, etc.  Random days, really, those days where you feel you haven't accomplished a whole lot and you can't understand where on earth the time has gone!
My family spent ages talking together afterwards and it was really wonderful!  I loved getting a chance to talk to Katy and Susie without their having to keep half of their attention on the children.  We've decided that we're all going to take a girl's night out next week, probably on Wednesday :D
Upon arrival at the flat, I filled out my postcards then started typing the last posted journal entry.  Uncle Phil came over for dinner and we had a very pleasant meal.  Not long after he left, Katy, Stephen (her husband), and their two children came to visit on their way back from Tesco's.
