RLM aircraft designation system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The RLM aircraft designation system was an attempt by the aviation bureaucracy of the Third Reich to standardize and produce a identifier for each aircraft type produced in Germany.
When the RLM (Reichsluftfahrtministerium "Reich Aviation Ministry") was given control of the country's aviation activities in 1933 it set out to catalogue both aircraft already in production by various manufacturers as well as new projects approved for development by the ministry.
See List of RLM aircraft for a full list of designations allocated by the RLM and the aircraft they correspond to.

The RLM was notoriously political, and probably did more to destroy the Luftwaffe than any military action on the part of the Allies.
The RLM was formed in April 1933 in the center of Berlin, from the Reichskommissariat für die Luftfahrt, which had been established two months earlier with Hermann Göring at its head.
RLM is the common acronym for it, which was used in wartime Germany and is reasonably common.

In typical Third Reich fashion, the RLM was personality driven and formal procedure often didn't exist or were purposefully ignored while influential people outside the RLM were allowed to interfere with RLM decisions as well.
However Göring staffed the RLM with politicos who spent as much time trying to rise up the organizational chart as they did working their jobs.
RLM is the official abbreviation for it, which was used in wartime Germany and is reasonably common.

More duplicates were created when the RLM allocated "8-" series numbers to captured foreign aircraft, such as Czech Zlin XII aircraft referred to as "8-12" when this same number was already being used for the Dornier Do 12.
Finally, the RLM occasionally deliberately took advantage of the confusion as a disinformation strategy, for example by numbering the Messerschmitt Me 163 the same as a previous, cancelled Messerschmitt aircraft, the Messerschmitt Bf 163.
The upshot of all this is that there is no single "master list" of designations that holds true throughout 1933-1945, and that the sequence is particularly muddled at the beginning and end of the list.

After the Me 163's designer, Alexander Lippisch left the project, Junkers was put in charge of finishing development of the Me 163D variant and was issued a new designation for the type.
The aircraft was an attempt to overcome the largest shortcomings of the Me 163, based on the results of tests with the Me 163D (a modified Me 163B, sometimes referred to as the Me 263 V1).
The fuselage was considerably stretched to accommodate larger fuel tanks to give longer range, the cockpit was redesigned for pressurisation and fitted with a bubble canopy to improve rear view for the pilot, and the Me 163's skid undercarriage was replaced with a conventional retractable undercarriage.
