RLM aircraft designation system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The RLM aircraft designation system was an attempt by the aviation bureaucracy of the Third Reich to standardize and produce an identifier for each aircraft type produced in Germany.
See List of RLM aircraft for a full list of designations allocated by the RLM and the aircraft they correspond to.
There is no single "master list" of designations that holds true throughout 1933-1945; the sequence is particularly muddled at the beginning and end of the list.

This list covers German aircraft of the Second World War that served in the Luftwaffe during World War II as defined by the year 1939-1945.
Number designations are largely by RLM designation system, though in this list they are partially organized by manufacture and role.
A list of aircraft of the from 1933-1945 can be found at list of RLM aircraft designations in the form of the Reich Aviation Ministry's list of aircraft.

List of RLM aircraft designations - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a list of aircraft type numbers allocated by an institution under the direction of Heereswaffenamt (before May 1933) and the RLM between 1933 and 1945 for German military and civilian aircraft.
See RLM aircraft designation system for an explanation of how these numbers were used.
This list is primarily based on the one published in Heinz J. Nowarra's Die deutsche Luftrüstung 1933-1945 ("German Air Armament 1933-1945"), a standard reference work on German aviation of the period.

 Reichsluftfahrtministerium - Gurupedia
This period is marked by an inability to deliver new aircraft designs that were desperately needed, as well as continued shortages of aircraft and engines.
Aircraft production shot up, and projects that had been hampered for political reasons, like the Heinkel He 219 Uhu were finally able to proceed.
RLM is the common acronym for it, which was used in wartime Germany and is reasonably common.

Aerospaceweb.org | Ask Us - German & Japanese Aircraft Designation Systems
Among these are the US systems for aircraft and missiles as well as the codenames given to Soviet aircraft.
This method consisted of a letter to indicate the aircraft's function, a sequential number to indicate a specific aircraft type (but unlike the USN system, the number 1 was retained), and a letter to indicate the manufacturing company.
Because the correct designations of Japanese aircraft were often not known to the Allies, simple codenames were assigned to them instead.

Captured aircraft, which are not included in the RLM lists in one of my sources are outside the scope of this designation listing.
Designations are written without a dash between the manufacturer's code and the RLM number, because that's the most common practice.
The designation Ju 187 was assigned by Junkers, and not by the RLM.

This is a list of all German Motors including all aircraft engines, rocket motors, jets and any other powerplants, along with a very basic description.
The RLM used an internal designation system that included a number signifying the engine type, 9 for piston engines and 109 for jets and rockets, followed by a manufacturer's code.
However this system was not widely used, even within the RLM, and a common name consisting of th manufacturer's name (often abbreviated) followed by the model number was much more common.

The RLM simply took over a system which was created already 1929/30 by Heereswaffenamt in Reichswehrministery together with other institutions and the industry.
The very first exemption from that rule was several years later granted Blohm and Voss, when they changed their name from Hamburger Flugzeugbau (Ha) to Blohm and Voss and got BV for their new aircraft, the first being the BV 138.
More duplicates were created when the RLM allocated "8-" series numbers to captured foreign aircraft, such as Czech Zlin XII aircraft referred to as "8-12" when this same number was already being used for the Dornier Do 12 That is similarly wrong.

The new listing is from information in the reports John gave me. These airfoils are really the same as those listed before, but now the designations are those actually used by Messerschmitt.
I have discovered that these aircraft were flown with two different wings, one having the EC airfoils, and the other having the NACA 23012 airfoil.
The listings for biplanes with different airfoils on the upper and lower wings have been changed to be more coherent.

The first conversion to Merlin power, designated the "HA-1109-M1L", took to the air on 30 December 1954 and demonstrated much improved performance, though it was still not as fast as a Gustav due to the clutter of the rocket racks and other close-support gear.
The aircraft had a four-bladed Rotol propeller and a nose with a "deep-breasted" appearance to accommodate the Merlin, and so was known as the "Buchon (Pigeon)".

Even before the war it was becoming apparent to some aircraft designers that propeller driven aircraft were nearing the limits of their possible performance.

A high speed development was designated Me 163A and, after preliminary tests, the prototype first flew with a 16501b (7.4kN) R.11 motor in the summer of 1941, attaining a speed of 624mph (1004km/h).

Given the overall design of this craft and the many sightings of flying saucers in New Mexico and the Western seaboard in the late 1940s it is safe to concluded that the sightings related to a saucer of terrestrial origin with limited performance characteristics.35
