The third series of Red Dwarf introduced some radical changes--all of them for the better--but the scripts remained as sharp and character-focussed as ever, making this a firm candidate for the show's best year.
Gone were the dull metallic grey sets and costumes, gone too was Norman Lovett's The third series of Red Dwarf introduced some radical changes--all of them for the better--but the scripts remained as sharp and character-focussed as ever, making this a firm candidate for the show's best year.
The benefits of the show's changes are apparent from the outset, with the mind-bending hilarity of "Backwards", in which Kryten and Rimmer establish themselves as a forwards-talking double-act on a reverse Earth.

  Britain.tv Wikipedia - Red Dwarf
Red Dwarf is a British science fiction sitcom that ran for eight series, from 1988 to 1999.
In the first episode, an on-board radiation leak kills everyone except for low-ranking technician Dave Lister (a genial Liverpudlian slob, albeit a more intelligent one than is initially apparent), who is in suspended animation at the time, and his pregnant cat, Frankenstein, who is safely sealed in the cargo hold.
Red Dwarf is known for its extremely cult status, largely due to its position in the sci-fi genre, and also due to the fact that it initially garnered low viewing figures (starting fairly strongly, but dropping off to the point where a second series may not have even been commissioned

Red Dwarf - The TV IV   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Red Dwarf (1988–99) is a comedy/science fiction series created by writers Rob Grant and Doug Naylor.
Over the course of its eight seasons, the setting and situation of the series has changed a number of times; in season six, Red Dwarf itself was "lost" by Lister, who left it around a planet described as "blue green and planetoidy".
Season eight brought the most (and most controversial) changes yet: Red Dwarf was recovered; the crew, including a non-hologrammatic Rimmer, were brought back from the dead; and Lister and friends found themselves locked in the ship's prison, for unlawful piloting of Starbug.

BBC - Comedy Guide - Red Dwarf
Ostensibly, despite its futuristic trappings, Red Dwarf has all the aspects of a traditional sitcom: a closed set, the clash of opposing personalities forced to share the same space, a surrogate family set-up and the continuing possibility that their dilemma might be resolved at any moment.
Red Dwarf is particularly popular in the USA, and in 1992 a pilot episode of an American adaptation was made by Universal for NBC.
Notes: As an aid to international sales, early episodes of Red Dwarf were revisited in the late 1990s, with computer-generated imagery, digital video effects and digital stereo sound replacing the suddenly very dated mechanical effects and mono sound of old.
