Republican Party (United States) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
November 2, 2004, Bush was re-elected, for the first time winning the popular vote (by three percentage points), while Republicans gained seats in both houses of Congress, leaving Democrats in disarray.
For a brief period, Republicans assumed control of Southern politics (due especially to the former slaves receiving the vote while it was denied to many whites who had participated in the Confederacy), forcing drastic reforms and frequently giving former slaves positions in government.
As the rural Northern postbellum economy mushroomed with industry and immigration, supporting invention and business became the hallmarks of Republican policy proposals.

 Encyclopedia: 2004 Republican National Convention
There are hundreds of groups organizing protests against the Republican National Convention, including United for Peace and Justice, a coalition of more than 800 anti-war and social justice groups, and International ANSWER.
The convention faced unprecedented protests in New York City throughout the week (see 2004 Republican National Convention protest activity), including a massive march on the Sunday preceding the convention and repeated infiltration of the convention by protestors.
Apart from nominating a candidate for President and Vice President, the 2004 Republican National Convention was also charged with crafting an official party platform and political agenda for the next four years.

CPL African Americans and National Party Convention History: A Chronology
The listings of southern Black Republican delegates to national conventions from 1868-1944 found in Black Republicans, some of which may only be partial, still indicate the slow progress of political parties, even the party that nominated Abraham Lincoln for the Presidency, in bringing African Americans into their ranks.
The first post-Abolition Republican National Convention, held in Chicago on May 20-21,1868, was attended by only four Black delegates representing North Carolina, South Carolina, Louisiana and Texas.
At the 1884 Republican National Convention, the highest position held by a Black delegate was likely the Temporary Chairmanship held by John R. Lynch from Mississippi.

 CNN.com - Stars shine on GOP fest - July 28, 2000
PHILADELPHIA (CNN) -- Republicans are trying to jazz up their image, and they're asked a pro wrestler, a couple of former Miss Americas, an assortment of singers and a handful of television and film stars to add some luster to next week's Republican National Convention.
Texas Gov. George W. Bush, who bills himself as a compassionate conservative, is anticipated to claim his party's nomination for president Thursday night after what's expected to be four days of political speeches, testimonials from ordinary citizens, entertainment, rallies and video tributes to past Republican presidents.
While conventions remain a highlight of the election cycle for pundits and politicians, fewer Americans watch them.

RNC NOT WELCOME:Political conventions to get unprecedented security
The national political conventions here and in Boston, the first since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, will have some of the tightest security ever seen for such events, including crowd-control barriers, bomb-sniffing dogs and an army of police and federal agents.
"We're fighting for the right to dissent against a mayor who is clearly working with federal officials and the Republican National Committee and who wants to chop this protest down."
When Republicans come to town this summer for their national convention, the only security measure that might be lacking around Madison Square Garden is a moat.

We will have up front for you, if you haven't already seen it, sheets that give directions about signing up for both the hotels in Boston for the Democratic convention and hotels in New York for the Republican convention.
Floor access is one of the most overrated privileges at both conventions, because especially when you're doing television, by the time you have a crew and you're trying to move a two-person-crew and a correspondent to get someplace in order to do a hit, you almost can't stand there.

 2004 Conventions
If you intend to offer a resolution at the convention, you will need to have it in writing and you will need to submit it to the convention secretary within 30 minutes after the permanent resolutions and platform committee is appointed - this is per Party rule.
Anyone who voted in the Republican Primary that day, or in early voting or ballot by mail, is eligible to participate in the Precinct Convention and to be elected as delegate to the County Convention to be held on Saturday, 27 March at the Memorial Civic Center.
Also left behind by the election judge should be a poll list showing who voted so you can determine who is eligible to participate or to be elected as a delegate or alternate-delegate to the County Convention.

IT IS OFTEN difficult to give compelling proof of media bias, since journalists can't be monitored in a laboratory, but a convincing case emerges from our study of network coverage of the Democratic and Republican conventions.
THROUGHOUT THE entire Democratic convention only one prime-time interview with a Republican (Bush Campaign Manager Lee Atwater) was conducted, though the Republican Party had dispatched an official Task Force for the sole purpose of offering commentary during their opponents' convention.
On the other hand, 41 per cent of the people given air-time to express their opinions at the Republican National Convention represented the minority moderate-toliberal faction of the party, including Congresswomen Lynn Martin, Claudine Schneider, and Nancy Johnson; Senators Lowell Weicker and Nancy Kassebaum; and Governor Tom Kean.
