Rhode Island is the smallest state in the Union, having an extreme length, N. and S., of 48 m., an extreme width, E. and W., of 37 m., and a total area of 1248 sq.
The Sakonnet river is a long bay separating Aquidneck or Rhode Island from the mainland on the E. The Pawcatuck river is the largest stream in the western half of the state, and along the lower part of its course it forms the boundary between Rhode Island and Connecticut.
Population.The total population of Rhode Island in 188o was 276,531; ill 189o, 345,506; in 1900, 428,556; and in 1910, 542,610.2 The increase from 1880 to 1890 was 24.9%, from 1890 to 1900 24%, and from 1900 to 1910, 26.6%.

KINGSTON, R.I. -- November 14, 2002 -- Rhode Island’s list of resident dragonflies and damselflies has grown to 133 species with the addition of 19 new records collected during a five-year census of the state’s ponds, streams and wetlands.
Administered by the Rhode Island Natural History Survey and The Nature Conservancy, the census is designed to identify and protect biodiversity hotspots in the state.
The Coppery Emerald is one of several rare southern species found during the census at the northern limits of their range.
