Researchers referring to this list may be reminded that divisions into separate religious bodies do not always indicate theological distinctions, but may be primarily geographical and administrative in purpose.
This list is only an attempt to list religious bodies, that is, organizations which have a recognized, central leadership or convention, and a body of individual members or adherents.
Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, Latter-day Saints, Baha'is and various Shiite groups are examples of religious bodies in which, for doctrinal reasons, the vast majority of adherents remain united as a single organizational unit.

The record of baptisms is much more extensive, and many entries relate to members of his congregation residing outwith Buittle Parish, and in particular to families of Irish immigrants who depended on the tolerance of the Maxwell family to allow access.
