It includes Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service squadrons incorporated into the RAF when it was formed in 1918, during World War I.
The list also includes squadrons from British Empire and Commonwealth air forces which have served within RAF units.
Squadrons with Roman numerals instead of Arabic numerals are identified in that fashion traditionally.

Defence against air attacks required the production of thousands of anti-aircraft guns, the stockpiling of tremendous quantities of ammunition over the country, and holding in readiness hundreds of thousands of soldiers, who in addition had to stay in position by their guns, often totally inactive, for months at a time.

 SAW Polish Air Force
The Polish Air Force was recreated in France from air crews who had managed to make their way via Rumania and other routes to French soil and by June 1940 it numbered 7,000 personnel and about 90 operational aircraft.
The squadron with a mixture of Lysanders and Mustangs was based at Kirknewton from March 1943, before heading south to England at the beginning of June.
Air Force studies ran from April 1943 to the beginning of 1944 at the Polish Military Staff College near Peebles.

In 1910 he appears on the list of the Balloon School as Cpl. In 1911-12 he is in 3rd Balloon Coy., RE.
Although there was a balloon factory and school at Chatham, and balloons had been used in the Bechuanaland (South Africa) Expedition of 1884, and in the Sudan Campaign of 1885, no establishment was authorized until 1890.
During that year the factory and school were moved from Chatham to Aldershot, and a balloon section and depot were formed as permanent units, thus recognizing balloons as part of the equipment of the British Army.

A new Air Force had to be built on the ruins of demobilization, the goal being 70 groups, the strength that was authorized for peacetime.

Many variants of the series were made including long range reconnaissance, balloon busters with upward firing 1.5lb guns,and the DH-4A airliner, which must have been a far cry from our idea of an airliner!
The official list of flying units shows no DH9s based here after 1919 but the picture to the left clearly shows one here with a Lynx-Avro 504, a type that was not built till the mid-1920s.
