Rock of Monaco - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Rock of Monaco has always been a coveted possession, from the nation's beginning as the Greek colony of Monoïkos, the Ligurian tribes who occupied the area vied for control of it, and before that it was a shelter for primitive populations.
The Rock was also the first conquest of the Grimaldi dynasty, the rulers of the country for more than 700 years, when the Guelf François Grimaldi disguised himself as a Franciscan monk in order to gain entry to the city and open the gates for his soldiers.
Today, the Rock is in the oldest of Monaco's five quarters, Monaco-Ville, which is also the location of Old Town, the oldest known part of the city.

The antediluvian patriarchs and the Sumerian King List   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
It is suggested that the Sumerian scribe that composed the original antediluvian list had available a document (possibly a clay tablet) containing numerical information on the ages of eight of the patriarchs similar to that of the Genesis record and that he mistakenly interpreted it as being written in the sexagesimal system.
The Sumerian list assigns an average reign duration of 30,150 years, with a total duration for the period of 241,200 years, compared to an average age of the biblical patriarchs of 858 years and a sum of 8575 years for their full lives.

List of rulers of Monaco - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Regent for Honoré IV The State Council of Monaco, consisting of Louis Millo-Terrazzani, Horace Pretti de Saint-Ambroise, Antoine Sigaldi, Joseph Rey, and Honoré Albini, ruled on behalf of Honoré IV from June 23, 1814 to March 4, 1819.
François Grimaldi is often cited as the principality's first ruler, though he was simply the leader of the group which seized the Rock of Monaco on 8 January 1297.
Starting in 1612, Honoré II was the first Monegasque ruler to add the personal style of Prince to his former title, Lord of Monaco; this became official when Philip IV of Spain recognized Monaco as a principality in 1633.

Guide and Index to Lists of Rulers
One motivation is that history is often not taught anymore in terms of dynasties and rulers, since this is thought (by an academic elite comfortably supported by the taxpayers) to be too elitist and too removed from the life of the people.
A skeleton for history of rulers, with maps and genealogies, provides a perspective of time and space, and on real individuals whom we know about, that is otherwise hard to obtain.
The arrangement of these lists thus follows Bryce's principle of universalist ideology, centering on Rome but extending to similar to ideas outside of the Roman world.

[b-hebrew] question re: Tel Dan stela   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The problem with this reasoning is that it would require the phrase in the Tel Dan Stele to actually read: [ML]K.DWD -- in other words, the element BYT should not be there.
This would see the Tel Dan Stele, which I date to c.795 BC (written by Bar-Hadad, son of Hazael), being a witness to some sort of state entity in Jerusalem.
That is, it sees Jerusalem as a city state, albeit very small, ruled by a famous family -- a kind of Monaco of the ancient world, only far less glamorous.

Castro disputes Forbes’ Richest Leader List   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Forbes magazine places Fidel Castro in 7th place on their list of “Fortunes Of Kings, Queens, and Dictators.” The magazine estimated Castro’s wealth to be at about $900 Million, according to Castro is “rubbish.” Forbes has accused Castro of having large sums of money in bank accounts abroad.
The fact is that Castro certainly doesnt suffer the fate of a poor man in his nation, and he probably has fine health care and private doctors.
But to concern one’s self with Castro as one of the richest men in the world is a little retarded, given that he will probably die as the humble ruler of a poor nation.
