The office of Marshal was known in England from the twelfth century but in introduction of the modern military title Great Britain was a relative latecomer.
It was by George I the first Hanoverian king in the of the continental armies; the Duke of Argyll became the first field marshal in 1736.

Field Marshal Erich von Manstein, when describing his experiences as a panzer corps commander in Russia during the summer of 1941, observed that "the security of a tank formation operating in the enemy's rear largely [depended] on its ability to keep moving.
When the Russians realized that the Germans were not going to follow their Smolensk triumph with an immediate drive on Moscow, Soviet attacks again flared up along the central front, The German passivity offered the Russians the unique opportunity of battering an entire German army group under conditions of Soviet choosing.
Field Marshal von Bock discerned the threat that these attacks posed to Army Group Center, Bock had no desire to see his units ground up piecemeal in battles of attrition and preferred instead to resume the fluid battles of maneuver that had earlier characterized the campaign.

Security problems include: inaccurate information, insiders issuing fake cards (this happens with state drivers' licenses), vulnerability of the large database, potential privacy abuses, etc. And, of course, no trans-national terrorists would be listed in such a system, because they wouldn't be U.S. citizens.
So are better authentication of airport maintenance workers, or dead-man switches that force planes to automatically land at the closest airport, or armed air marshals traveling on flights.
