Topic: List of Scheduled Tribes in India

Adivasi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Officially recognized by the Indian government as "Scheduled Tribes" in the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution of India, they are often grouped together with scheduled castes in the category "Scheduled Castes and Tribes", which is eligible for certain affirmative action measures.
Another concentration lives in the hilly areas of central India (Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, and, to a lesser extent, Andhra Pradesh); in this belt, which is bounded by the Narmada River to the north and the Godavari River to the southeast, tribal peoples occupy the slopes of the region's mountains.
India's 1931 census enumerated 22 million tribal people, in 1941 only 10 million were counted, but by 1961 some 30 million and in 1991 nearly 68 million tribal members were included.

Stigma of Criminality : India's Denotified and Nomadic Tribes
Once a tribe became notified as belonging to a criminal class, all members of the group were required to register at a specific time and place with the local magistrate.
Thus the members of these tribes were caught in the colonial nexus of land reform, the need for cheap labour, and the rhetoric of social reform.
Although not listing certain groups as being inherently criminal, the Habitual Offenders Acts use many of the same registration and notification procedures as outlined in the Criminal Tribes Acts, and have been used routinely against members of DNT-NTs.
