He was presented with the Victoria Cross by General Sir Redvers Buller VC on 4th March 1900 at Ladysmith, South Africa.
It is known that he was alive in January 1887 because he was reported in the quarterly army list of the recipients of the Victoria Cross for January 1887.

Morton and Eden are auctioning the Victoria Cross awarded to John Pearson of the 8th Hussars for his gallantry during the charge at Gwalior in 1858.
The Victoria Cross awarded to Corporal Filip Konowal, 47th British Columbia Regt is to be auctioned by Jeffrey Hoare Auctions of London, Ontario on 31 May. There are, however, moves to prevent this as the Cross "disappeared" from the Canadian War Museum.

A majority of Scottish winners were from the 78th Highlanders and got it for actions during the Indian Mutiny (1858).
Some of the members there think it could be a "gallantry" cross that resembles the VC in shape but not in detail.
