British Railways (BR), later rebranded as British Rail, ran the railway system from the nationalisation of the 'Big Four' companies in 1948 until its privatisation in stages between 1994 and 1997.
British Railways came into existence from 1 January 1948, under the control of the Railway Executive of the British Transport Commission (BTC).
The early sixties also saw the "Great Locomotive Cull", with mass withdrawals of steam types, and their replacement with diesels, fewer of which were now needed on the now shrinking system.

The company was "Grouped" into the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) on January 1, 1923 and was the most influencial of the pre-grouping companies that formed the LMS.
It was formed in 1844 by the merger of the Midland Counties Railway, the North Midland Railway, and the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway.
The Midland owned a large network of railway lines centred on the East Midlands, and its head offices were in Derby.

The full list shows that 11 of the top 20 placings are occupied by European Union states, and that 13 of the top 20 are European states (EU and non-EU), according to this scale anyway.
