The senior order, the Order of the Star of India, was divided into three grades, Knight Grand Commander, Knight Commander and Companion, of which the first and highest was conferred upon the Princes and Chiefs of Indian states and upon important British civil servants working in India.
Irish-born Sir Terry Wogan was initially awarded an honorary knighthood, but by the time he collected the accolade from the Queen in December 2005, he had obtained dual-citizenship and the award was upgraded to a substantive knighthood.
Occasionally an award for Gallantry may be made posthumously and in this case The Queen presents the decoration or medal to the recipient's next-of-kin in private before the public Investiture begins.

The award, which is sponsored by ICI and the Joint Polymer Education Committee of the ACS Divisions of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering (PMSE) and Polymer Chemistry, is given annually for the best paper presented at the ICI Student Award Symposium as part of the PMSE program at the fall ACS meeting.
This award was established in 1992 and recognizes outstanding contributions to the long-term welfare of the division.
The Remsen Award was established in 1946 to commemorate the career of Ira Remsen--the first professor of chemistry and the second president at Johns Hopkins University--as a chemist, educator, and administrator.

Senior co-captain Brent D'Amico (Castle Rock, Colo./St. Stephen's Episcopal School [TX]) copped his third major award in the last two weeks, as he was named the Midwest Region's recipient of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA)/Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship by the ITA.
Since the award began in 1993, Notre Dame has had four regional winners, but D'Amico was the first in nine years.
Then D'Amico was one of three recipients (the only male) of the Kanaley Award, which honors senior student-athletes who have been exemplary as both students and leaders.

 Birmingham's Brotherton heads list of 11 PGA professionals honored at gala awards ceremony
Brotherton, 54, is the 50th recipient of the highest honor bestowed by The PGA of America on a PGA Professional and he is the first member of the Dixie PGA Section to be so honored.
PGA Merchandiser of the Year (Private Facilities) -- David Impastato of St. Charles, Ill., is the head professional at St. Charles Country Club, and the 35-year-old is the fourth Illinois PGA member to win a PGA Merchandiser of the Year Award and second from his facility.
Award recipients must demonstrate service to the Association through mentoring their fellow professionals, overall contributions to the Association, and through contributions and service to the local community, including charitable work.

So this year when the letter arrived informing me that I had been selected to be this year's recipient, I was completely surprised and delighted.
It is an honor to join the other recipients of the Miriam Dudley Award and to be named in the same year that Hannelore Radar was named the Academic/Research Librarian of the Year and Susan Nutter was presented with the Hugh C. Atkinson Memorial Award.

For this reason, sponsorship rules were changed to require that, if a sponsored immigrant applies for SSI or AFDC benefits after arrival, a portion of the sponsor's income and other resources will be "deemed" to be available to the immigrant as part of their income in determining whether the immigrant is eligible for benefits.
The House Republicans proposal would, one year after enactment, make all aliens ineligible for AFDC and SSI for six years after their arrival, except for refugees and aliens 75 and older who have lived in the US at least five years.

Fellowships are awarded in all subject areas of museum theory and operations.
An award consists of a stipend of $3,000 per month plus round-trip travel expenses between the recipient's home and Washington, D.C. Funds to support participation in a relevant conference or seminar will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Awards are announced in the summer for fellowships beginning in October 2006.
