Far be it for me to criticize the wishes of my correspondents (and I hope I haven't betrayed their confidences by splashing word of their existence over the list); I am certainly quite experienced myself in having to remain mum about all kinds of matters for all kinds of reasons.
But the question I want to raise is: what array of facts or circumstances can it be that prompts our fellow linguists to wish to remain anonymous about their opinions with regard to the sociology of the field, and such things as patterns of reading, patterns of bibliographical citations, and so forth?
That individual is then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list.

An "authoritative" physics text presents the results of physicists' observations and physicists' theories about those observations.
Structural linguists like Gove and Fries are not, finally, scientists but census-takers who happen to misconstrue the importance of "observed facts." It isn't scientific phenomena they're tabulating but rather a set of human behaviors, and a lot of human behaviors are—to be blunt—moronic.
