The fl population of Johannesburg and the rest of Gauteng Province is ethnically mixed, but in other cities one group tends to be dominant: Zulu in Durban and Pietermaritzburg, Sotho in Bloemfontein, and Xhosa in Port Elizabeth, East London, and Cape Town.

If you are a white South African, chances are you've heard somebody you know complaining about all the place names being changed (e.g "Polokwane" for "Pietersburg").
Tshwane is, quite simply, the African name for the Apies** River which runs through the city, as well as the name used for the Pretoria area.
