The present highway network in New South Wales was established in August 1928 when the Country Roads Board (the predecessor of the Department of Main Roads and Roads and Traffic Authority) superseded the 1924 main road classifications and established the basis of the existing NSW main road system.
Since 1954 most NSW highways have carried a national route number but these are not generally known or used, with the exception of Highway 1 is assigned to the highways which follow the Australian mainland coast, and route 31 (the Hume Highway), which connects Sydney and Melbourne.
National Highway routes in New South Wales include the Hume Highway between Sydney and Melbourne and the New England Highway route between Newcastle and Brisbane, and the Western and Dukes Highway between Melbourne and Adelaide.

The 514 km track runs from Marree, a small town in northern South Australia, north across the Strzelecki Desert and ending in Birdsville in southwestern Queensland.
In former years the track was of a very poor quality and suitable only for four-wheel drive vehicles, but it has been upgraded to a fullscale dirt road and is now a popular tourist route.
The area is extremely barren, dry and isolated, and anyone wishing to travel the track must carry fresh water, supplies, fuel, and spare parts for their vehicle with them in case of emergencies.
