In the 1600's Marshal's of the Field began to manage encampments and one would be appointed for each battlefield to communicate the Commanders orders.
The term Field Marshal gained currency by the time of the English Civil War and appointments were more common.
In 1643 Ralph Hopton was commissioned as "Field Marshal of the Western Army", and as he had been a Lieutenant-General this suggests the rank had slipped upwards several grades.
