The City of Toronto has a physical area of approximately 630 km² and is bounded by Lake Ontario to the south, Etobicoke Creek and Highway #427 to the west, Steeles Avenue to the north, and the Rouge River to the east.
Located on the northern shore of Lake Ontario, Toronto was originally a term of indeterminate geographical location, designating the approximate area of the future city of Toronto on maps dating to the late 17th and early 18th century.
Toronto also is home to a major orchestra (the Toronto Symphony Orchestra), which performs at Roy Thomson Hall, as well as the Canadian Opera Company, and Tafelmusik, an internationally-known baroque orchestra and chamber choir.

From 1834-1857, and again from 1867-1873, Toronto mayors were not elected directly by the public.
Note that the definition of Toronto changed substantially during this period with the city amalgamating with neighbouring communities in 1882, 1891, 1908, 1912, 1967, and most recently (and most sweepingly) in 1998.

Alan Tonks (born April_2 1943 in Toronto, Ontario) is a Canadian politician, and was the final Metro_Toronto_Chairman before the amalgamation of Metro_Toronto into the new City of Toronto.
Tonks is the son of the late Chris_Tonks who was a mayor and alderman in what was then the Borough_of_York in Metropolitan Toronto.
Tonks served as Metro Chairman until 1997 when the municipality was amalgamated by the provincial government of Mike_Harris resulting in the abolition of Metro Council and the replacement of the Metro Chairman by a new Mayor of Toronto directly elected by all voters.
