  Where Marxmail came from
Marxmail is descended from the first Marxism mailing list on the Internet, which was launched by the Spoons Collective in June or July of 1994, according to Professor Jon Beasley-Murray.
Soon the list began attracting former and current members or sympathizers of revolutionary organizations, and the topics began to have more of the character we are familiar with from Marxmail.
The flame wars between Trotskyists and Maoists and between Maoist and Maoist were exacerbated by the unmoderated status of the Marxism list.

Besides the problem noted above (the fact that "communist state" is technically an oxymoron), there is one further issue with this term: there were (and are) many communists who opposed the governments of those countries and who argued that their ruling parties were communist in name only.
The best known of these dissenting communists are probably the Trotskyists.
Trotsky himself was exiled, and eventually assassinated in Mexico in 1940 by a Stalinist agent.

I believe that it would be very helpful if other list members contribute any experiences (both good and bad) they may have along these lines.
Yes it would seem that there may be certain Trotskyists on M-I who act like clowns, sectarians etc. What is important however, for everyone to recognize, is that those Trotskyists on this list do not have some kind of monopoly on buffoonery.
I hope it is clear to list readers that I was referring to Trotsky's conduct in the period leading to the final break between the Bolsheviks and the Mensheviks.
