 Motto - Biocrawler
There are many exceptions, particularly in modern heraldry: for examples, the mottos of the State of Hawai‘i and the University of Hawai‘i are in Hawaiian, and the motto of Nunavut is in Inuktitut, while in England the motto of the County of Somerset is written in Anglo-Saxon.

In heraldry, a motto is often depicted in a coat of arms, typically on a scroll under the arms, or else above it as in Scots heraldry.

For an extensive list of sundial mottos, you may visit Sundials on the Internet.
Almost all sundials have a motto of some sort, which is considered (along with the various lines and numerals) to be part of what dialmakers call the 'furniture' of the dial.
The motto "Fugio" is Latin for "I fly," and one may think of time flying as the shadow moves across the face of the dial.

 Scout.com: Sound Off
You see, mottos are never as cool as they originally sound, not to mention they give your rivals a whole new lexicon from which to harass you.
Perhaps the best motto of all time, of course, is the dearly departed “I will hold the rope.” Taken from some fable I still don’t understand, it was again an effort to preach accountability (I think).
Of course, Mike also has a few of his own that he would like to see splashed across T-shirts.

The motto for the 110th pope, John Paul II, is de laboris solis, "[He] of the labor of the sun." This prophecy is said to fit because the sun labors by traveling around the world (Malachy wrote before Copernicus!) and Pope John Paul II was famous for his travels.
The motto for the 109th pope, John Paul I, is de medietate lune, "[He] of the half moon." This prophecy is said to have been fulfilled because John Paul I became pope during a half moon and died 33 days later during another half moon.
Malachy's list was supposedly given to pope Innocent II, and remained hidden in the church archives until it was "discovered" in 1590, and published in 1595 by Arnold de Wyon.

 Live Free or Die NH
It is probably the best-known of all state mottos, perhaps because it speaks to an aggressive independence inherent in the American dream.
The motto became "Live Free Or Die," as once voiced by General John Stark, the state's most distinguished hero of the Revolutionary War, and the world famous Old Man of the Mountain was voted the official state emblem.
Instead he sent the toast, which said in full: "Live free or die: Death is not the worst of evils." In 1945, the New Hampshire Legislature adopted the phase as the state's motto, and in 1971 chose to have it appear on all New Hampshire license plates, replacing the sentiment "Scenic".

The Gore Roll of Arms - New England Historic Genealogical Society
The presence of a motto above the crest suggests Scottish origin, but a search of Nisbet (1804), Seton (1863), Paul (1893, 1903) and Johnston (1912) yields no clue, nor does the list of mottos found in Fairbairn.
The crest of an ear of maize suggests local origin; noth-ing like it is found in Fairbairn, the only Kilby crest in the book referring to a family with an entirely different coat of arms.
The arms given in the Gore Roll as those of Christopher Kilby recur in No. 92 on an escutcheon of pretence referring to the marriage of his daughter Sarah to Captain McAdams.

A list of mottos used only on Ruckers instruments was published on pp165–7 of Grant O’Brien’s 1990 book for Cambridge University Press, Ruckers — A harpsichord and virginal building tradition.
The lid interiors of many of the original Flemish instruments had mottos in Latin, lettered in bold black Roman upper case on the moiré papers after the papers were glued to the lid and flap.
To fit on the lids, many of the mottos were truncated versions of much older conceits or biblical references, so knowing a little Latin is not necessarily enough to grasp the idea of some.

 US State Nicknames
I haven't included slogans or state mottos (which sometimes get mixed up with nicknames), and it's important to note that some nicknames were never widely adopted, having sometimes only appear in the press or other publications.
However, a number of states have officially added a nickname to their licence plates (either as an option, or as an obligation under the legislation) even though the nickname is not recognised separately as a "state symbol".
One of the oldest state nicknames (and that which appeasr on its licence plates) is the Keystone State, probably applied to Pennsylvania from the late 18th century (although the first official citation is from 1802, when at a rally Pennsylvania was toasted as "the keystone in the union").

Like the New York Times' "All the News That's Fit to Print," the motto was a statement of principle for some newspapers; for others, such as the Chicago Tribune ("World's Greatest Newspaper") or the Allentown Morning Call ("Lehigh Valley's Greatest Newspaper"), it was simply a chest-out boast.
