This period of social unrest on campus could be traced to the Free Speech Movement, which originated on the Berkeley campus in 1964 and inspired the political and moral outlook of a generation.
According to the National Research Council, Berkeley ranks first nationally in the number of graduate programs in the top 10 in their fields (97 percent) and first nationally in the number of "distinguished" programs for the scholarship of the faculty (32 programs).

UC students and alumni won a total of 12 gold, 10 silver and 13 bronze medals.

UC Berkeley plans to advise the 98,369 people affected by the laptop theft to check their credit reports, although there has been no indication any of he personal information has been used illegally, university spokeswoman Maria Felde said.

The paper Lessons Learned in Massive Video Production (MVP) for University Alumni Outreach described Lynne's work with UC Berkeley's physics department on alumni outreach using a datacenter-based scalable video production server array technology called ExecProducer.
She received an Alumni Award for this work at the Physics Department Alumni Reunion and Dinner October 2003.
Asked later about her feelings on receiving this award, "The unexpected honor I have received tonight from my department is without doubt one of the most wonderful moments of my life."

The UC Berkeley professor took over the reins -- and the chair's traditional whip -- of the school's nuclear engineering department last year, becoming the first woman to chair a U.S. university's nuclear department.
She started "courting" UC Merced right after graduation and did research in Australia and at UC Davis and spent a year in Prague before being hired at Merced in July 2004.
"Going Beyond 10,000 Years at Yucca Mountain": U.C. Berkeley researchers, Professors Per Peterson and William Kastenberg, have issued a joint report co-authored with Professor Michael Corradini at the University of Wisconsin, analyzing a draft proposed safety standard for the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository that was issued by the EPA on August 8.
