Berkeley physicists played a key role in developing the atomic bomb during WWII and the hydrogen bomb soon afterwards, and the University has managed the nation's two principal nuclear weapons labs (now also used for more peaceful research) at Livermore and Los Alamos ever since.
The campus is bordered on the west by Downtown Berkeley, on the north by older neighborhoods, and on the east by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the Berkeley Hills.
UC Berkeley is perennially the most selective school in the UC system and one of the most selective universities in the United States.

Berkeley is traversed by the Hayward Fault, a major branch of the San Andreas Fault to the west.
Berkeley has a Mediterranean climate, with dry summers and wet winters as is typical in the Mediterranean region, but with a cool modification in summer thanks to upwelling ocean currents along the California coast.

The faculty are Francisco J. Ayala of UC Irvine, Marvin L. Cohen of UC Berkeley, Charles D. Keeling of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, Gabor A. Somorjai of UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and Harold E. Varmus of UC San Francisco.
The five UC researchers were among 14 scientists and one engineer who were awarded National Medals of Science for 2001.
It marks the second time that five medals in one year were awarded to UC faculty; the first occurred in 1983.

Unlike other programs where there is a large core school psychology faculty responsible for the teaching of all core courses and the research and professional supervision of all students in the program, the Berkeley program was designed to merge academic and research education with professional education and training by developing mergers of faculty expertise.
He obtained his Ph.D. in Educational and School Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1994, and served on the School Psychology faculty at Penn State from 1994 to 2003, where he taught courses on consultation and dropout prevention and was Coordinator of the Center for Educational Diagnosis and Remediation (CEDAR) Clinic.

Kiplinger's Personal Finance said in its study of the 100 best values in publication education for the fall 2003 semester that UC, San Diego ranked 16th nationally, followed by UC, Berkeley at 17th and UCLA at 37th.
Other UC campuses on the list were UC, Davis ranked 52nd, UC, Irvine 58th, UC, Santa Barbara 65th, UC, Santa Cruz 94th and UC, Riverside 100th.
The rankings were determined by compiling a list of the top 100 public colleges based on freshman SAT or ACT scores as well as other measures of academic quality - including admission rates, student-faculty ratios, faculty quality, school spending on instruction and libraries and graduation rates.

The second study uses the survey information from the first to construct an experimental floral resource garden at the UC Berkeley Oxford Tract that is specifically designed to attract diverse native bee species.
In this regard native California plant species are used to attract generalist and specialist bees with the goal of learning the potential of small gardens, stocked with preferred natives, to attract high diversity and abundance of bee species.
