Unix - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1983, Richard Stallman announced the GNU project, an ambitious effort to create a free software Unix-like system; "free" in that everyone who received a copy would be free to use, study, modify, and redistribute it.
Most common is the conventional "Unixes", but the culture that created Unix has a penchant for playful use of language, and "Unices" (treating Unix as Latin word) is also popular.

The master list maintained here at BRL runs about two hundred fifty entries with roughly ten percent of those being local redistribution lists.
This list is also a classified list, with books grouped into categories, which may be better if you are looking for a specific type of book.
Most Unices (the more common plural form) are derived more or less directly from AT&T code (some code from the first C version is presumably still left in most), but there are also clones (i.e.

Are they SO different you are forced to learn one rather than the other...or are they so similar that there really isn't much of a difference to the END user (not the person who is doing the programming)?
If there is a difference, is there a consensus as to which one is better as measured by: i) stability ii) efficiency iii) security iv) ease of administration 4.

As any admin who has been around the block will tell you, you can't always use the best tool for the job.
And while other unices may have better implementations, Linux is coming on really fast and quite strong.
This isn't the first one of these cases you've seen, it certainly won't be the last, and it's not always as simple as "don't use it - use something else." IMHO, that's a pretty limiting view of reality.

The directory of the first one is shown in Listing 1.
Having a list of all the links, particularly non-standard ones belonging to other Unices, and a list of important files in non-standard locations would make it much easier for experienced Unix users to recommend Slackware as highly as other distributions.

Sorry I can't find a single page one for all of UNIX, but if you get your hands on "The Design and Implementation of the 4.3BSD UNIX Operating System" or "The Design and Implementation of the 4.4BSD Operating System", there's a reasonable overview in the first chapter.

No normal user should be able to modify the list of who can access what data.
Revoking access is easy with a centralized capability list (though most Unices don't allow this); harder with distributed capabilites (in this case, you can "link" capabilities through the owner.
The important question is the "safety problem": can user X read file Y? Unfortunately, this is unsolvable (the halting problem can be reduced to this).

This section lists a number of things you can look at in attempting to identify the base flavor of your Unix.
Given the significant exchange of code and ideas between the various flavors and the many changes made by vendors, any statement such as "this Unix is an SVR2" is at best a statistical statement (except for some SVRn ports).
Also many Unices offer most of both worlds (either mixed as in SunOS or strictly separated as in Apollo?).
