The Brigade was formed from assets of the 1st Marine Division and 1st Marine Aircraft Wing at Camp Pendleton, CA.
The Brigade was activated on 7 July 1950 and built around two units, the 5th Marines as a regimental combat team and Marine Aircraft Group 33 (MAG-33).
Some 6,800 troops were sent from the 2d Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, NC for both the Brigade and to begin the rebuilding of the 1st Marine Division.

 USN Squadrons
VF was a Fighter squadron, VSB a Scout Bomber one, some squadron designations were not so obvious.
Here is a list, derived from James C. Fahey's Ships and Aircraft of the United States Fleet, Victory Edition, 1945.
USS Ranger was CV-4, so her squadrons were numberd VF-4, etc. However, after America's entry into the war, this ceased to be the case, as squadrons had to be refitted and retrained after seeing combat.
