 Advertising Collections at the University of Illinois Archives
Collections in the University Archives of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, along with those in the Communications Library provide an important source for the study of advertising.
The Archives' interest in primary source material on advertising is bolstered by the College of Communications' Cummings Center for Advertising Studies at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
To help preserve advertising history, the Center is developing a database that will list the holdings of major advertising archives and libraries including those at the University of Illinois, Duke University, and the Smithsonian Institution.

May 5, 2003: The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Senate voted today to adopt a dissection alternatives policy, the first of its kind at a major U.S. university.
February 3, 2005: While we do not have a list of every class using animals, it appears that at least some classes in the timetable now indicate both whether or not a course includes dissection and whether or not alternatives are available.
In other news, April Kung at Virginia Commonwealth University is working on a student chocie policy at her school.

 Paul Selvin, UIUC Physics

The title of his thesis was "DNA Dynamics: From Picoseconds to Milliseconds." Since August of 2000, Professor Selvin has been an associate professor in the Department of Physics, at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; prior to that he was an assistant professor.
He came to Urbana in 1997 from the Life Science Division, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, where he was a staff scientist from October 1995 to August 1997, and a research chemist in the Chemistry Department of the University of California, Berkeley from October 1993 to October 1995.

 Plagiarism
In the spring semester of 2000, Bear Braumoeller, an assistant professor of government at Harvard University and Brian Gaines, an associate professor of political science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) began their plagiarism study involving UIUC students taking Political Science 100: Introduction to Political Science.
Lawrence Lessig, a law professor at Stanford University is one of the chief theorists of cyberlaw.
An investigation conducted by the University of Frankfurt (German) found that one of its anthropology professors "falsified data, plagiarized the work of his peers, and attempted to sell ape skulls belonging to the university." Reiner Protsch von Zieten's resignation went into effect at the beginning of February, weeks before the university's commission announced its findings.

The study abroad program is planned for students who will be in the junior year of their undergraduate architectural studies program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

This letter is a statement of the position of the Illinois Native American Bar Association with respect to the use of Native American mascots in public schools and in particular the use of the "Chief Illiniwek" mascot by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Even various departments of the University of Illinois have expressed their desire that the "Chief Illiniwek" mascot be retired.
By retaining the "Chief Illiniwek" mascot, the University of Illinois ignores the overwhelming of other educational schools and organizations from the use of Native American mascots.

Maria Ramos, associate director of housing and director of university food services for the Urbana campus, recently was honored with the first Chancellor's Medallion.
He also noted that up to 200 people had been involved in the evaluation process and they were "not just a bunch of techies," but included many people who would have to deal with the systems at the front end.
The university may have to wait several weeks to see what happens not only on campus but in the rest of the world, he said.

 Polls, not Bush Administration, helped shape Americans' bias against Saddam
Last May, as a senior at Illinois and under the guidance of Althaus, Largio released her own study on the Bush administration’s rationales for going to war in Iraq.
The authors say that the high levels of “public misperception” about Saddam’s culpability can be attributed to two things: the American public’s predisposition to believing Saddam was the culprit, and the wording and format of polling questions put to them, which overstated the degree of misperception that Saddam was the villain behind Sept. 11.
Their findings will appear in the October issue of PS: Political Science and Politics in an article titled “When Osama Became Saddam: Origins and Consequences of the Change in America’s Public Enemy #1.” The article will be posted on the journal's Web site on Sept. 10.
