Philosophers' Imprint, from the University of Michigan, is a peer-reviewed OA journal whose motto is, "Edited by philosophers.
If the university is worried about a runaway expense, then it could cap the number of dollars or articles per faculty member per year, and raise the cap over time as the spread of OA brings about larger and larger savings to the library serials budget.
Public universities should explain to the citizens of their state, state legislators, and state newspapers, why their new OA policies are maximizing the return on tax dollars, and how they put the university in the vanguard of enlightened institutions.

The lobbyist, Gary Glenn, says professor David M. Halperin and the university "are guilty of perpetrating a fraud against UM students and the people of Michigan [with] propaganda statements about so-called cultural studies and academic freedom" as they promote "queer studies" at taxpayer expense.
Robert M. Owen, the university's associate dean for undergraduate education in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts, defends Mr.
Glenn argues that such a statement by a university official "mocks and even taunts Michigan taxpayers, reveling that the more taxpayers dare protest the use of their tax dollars to teach kids 'How to be Gay,' the more students will enroll in the class.

In the spring of 1998, MSU Green, a group of MSU faculty, staff, and students, presented a proposal to Academic Council for implementing a campus environmental assessment.
The assessment would be designed to determine the University's positive impacts on the environment and to highlight and market those endeavors, as well as to measure negative impacts and to develop cost-effective strategies for minimizing those effects.
The assessment process would begin with a seminar series that brings together outside resource people and MSU personnel and students to collaboratively design assessments in the areas of energy, water and solid waste.

Although children are frequently cited as the greatest source of joy in people's lives, researchers say taking care of children isn't always enjoyable.
"When people are asked how much they enjoy spending time with their kids they think of all the nice things -- reading them a story, going to the zoo," says researcher Norbert Schwarz of the University of Michigan, in a news release.

Judge Bernard Friedman rules in favor of the plaintiff, saying the University of Michigan Law School's use of race in admissions violates the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
The cases tested whether the university is allowed to discriminate because it values diversity in its student body, or whether discrimination is only justified to reverse past racial injustice.
The majority of appellate court justices sided with the university view that a diverse student body has its own benefits, and that a "points" system for admission that takes the race of the applicant into account in an overall score wasn't a quota.

While on the surface it may not appear as inane as some of the other lists, it is by far the craziest the network has been with its ranking obsession.

The ethics and nobility thing would ring true if the University of Michigan were actually assuming responsibility for this project.
I think what she’s talking about is section 4.4.1 of the contract which prevents the University from giving a third party a copy of the files.
