Cambridge's status as a University is further confirmed by a decree in 1233 from Pope Gregory IX which awarded the ius non trahi extra (a form of legal protection) to the chancellor and universitas of scholars at Cambridge.
Although the university now offers courses in a large number of subjects, it had a particularly strong emphasis on mathematics from the time of Isaac Newton until the mid-19th century, and study of this subject was compulsory for graduation.
The universities of Cambridge and Oxford are jointly referred to by the portmanteau term Oxbridge: the two universities have a long history of competing with each other.

The scholars that founded Cambridge were also escaping attacks from the townsfolk of Oxford, and the monarchs of England and subsequently their governments were to exert influence on the University’s activities again and again in the centuries to come.
My two years as a member of the Council gave me the opportunity to witness first hand how these have been accomplished and I especially congratulate the two Chancellors, Sir Edward Woodward and Ms Fay Miles, and the Vice-Chancellor, Alan Gilbert who presided during my term.
As we have seen, this university began as an institution of the state, and funded by it.
