The cross is suspended by a ring from a seriffed "V" to a bar ornamented with laurel leaves, through which the ribbon passes.
The Victoria Cross was awarded for his actions during the Waikato-Hauhau Maori War, New Zealand on 29 April 1864 whilst the Iron Cross was awarded for tending the wounded during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71.

The cross includes metals from three sources: gunmetal used in the production of British Victoria Crosses, a medal minted in 1867 in commemoration of the Confederation of Canada, and metals from all regions of Canada from coast to coast to coast.
To be honest, though, I'd rather have had Canada find a different name: the Victoria Cross has stood for 150 years throughout the empire and commonwealth as a signal honour.
