Drummey couldn’t put her finger on why Vietnamese Americans are doing nails, saying only that they “have an orientation for personal care service.” But nonetheless, getting hired at a place where the boss speaks your language is always easier than the converse.
Vietnamese immigrants’ children, she said, “are acclimated to the American life and are not willing to work under the same condition.” Nevertheless, Drummey doubts the Vietnamese segment of the market is going to disappear.

The 1.2 million-strong Vietnamese American community reflects upon this dramatic historical journey in 2005, which marks ten years since the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between the United States and Vietnam, and 30 years since the fall of the Saigon government, which initiated the ‘first wave’ of Vietnamese refugees.
Vietnamese immigrants were only identified separately by the Office of Immigration Statistics in the decade of the 1950s, when 335 were admitted as refugees and became Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs).
Although the Vietnamese community has a per capita income 40 percent lower than the national average, the median family income is the highest of all the Southeast Asian American refugee populations ($46,929 according to the 2000 Census).

American involvement in the war was a gradual process, as its military involvement increased over the years under successive U.S. presidents, both Democrat and Republican (including Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon), despite warnings by the American military leadership against a major ground war in Asia.
One of the first occurred on July 27, 1964 when 5,000 additional American military advisers were ordered sent to South Vietnam which brought the total number of US forces in Vietnam to 21,000.
Then on August 4, 1964 American destroyers USS Maddox and USS C. Turner Joy were attacked in the Gulf of Tonkin.

How convenient it is that Vietnamese Americans and Vietnamese are being left out of this discussion again.
This is too bad because the Vietnamese-American perspective on the Vietnam War at this conference can only add value to the conference’s goals and America’s foreign policy.
