It was critical to Volkswagen on its introduction in 1973, as the sales of the aging Beetle were declining, and larger air-cooled rear-engined models like the Volkswagen Type 3 and 411 and 412 based on older technology were also failing to take hold in the market.
Following the Volkswagen Group's acquisition of Audi in 1964, Volkswagen was able to use newly gained engineering expertise to develop a modern front wheel drive car with a water-cooled engine, and thus the Passat and Golf (the latter being introduced in 1974) were the first of a new generation of Volkswagens.
The range of engines was more extensive than that of the first generation Passat, and included a 5 cylinder Audi 2.0 L petrol and a 1.9 L diesel as well as all the engines previously available in the B1 model.

Subscribe to the VW Aeroengines mailing list, and read their archives, particularly anything by Bob Hoover (not that one, the other one).
A guy on the VW Aero Engines list is working with one of them, and in a tractor setup, it's not easy to cowl.
And Bob Hoover posted this message on the subject in the VW AeroEngines Mailing list, along with several related messages on how to build engine mounts for this configuration, etc. I strongly believe this is the right way to drive the prop, and the engine I'm assembling will be done this way.

There is one killer for diesel engines and that is the short commutes.

Published in 1970 this book would be very good for the novice of vw air-cooled.
The current printing has no updates and lists some catalogues as being 50 cents.
If you want to know how to exhaust tuning, port sylinder heads (very good section), make better carburetion, what you have to do that it stay together, read this book once at least.

Born as a piece of political machinery the VW has been described as not so much a car as a way of life.
This book has great engine set up info that is as valid today as it was 30 years ago.
I give it three stars because the parts list is obsolete and some of the people mentioned are no longer with us.
