However, the deepest stations in the system are not in Washington, but at the northeastern end of the Red Line, with Wheaton having the longest escalator in the western hemisphere at 230 feet (70 meters), and Forest Glen being even deeper than that; so deep, the only way to the surface is by elevator.

Metro's Losses Spark Talk of Service Cuts, Fare Rise
The fact that rush hour commuters have continued to ride Metro means the transit agency continues to grapple with crowding during the busiest periods and can't postpone or drop capital plans to buy more rail cars, add stations and expand the subway to accommodate growth, White said.
Metro officials are bracing for a wave of new subway commuters once that benefit takes effect.
Metro's bread-and-butter customer – the commuter traveling to and from work who represents 70 percent of the agency's daily subway riders – has remained loyal.

Here is a list of stations on the Metrorail subway system of Washington D.C. Stations in bold are transfer stations; while lines may share many stations (particularly Blue and Orange), only stations where lines cross, or stations where lines diverge (such as when the Blue and Orange lines go separate ways) are considered transfer stations.

In the Washington area a number of government stations, including the Navy's NAA in Arlington, Virginia and NSF-NOF in Anacostia, D.C. and the Post Office's WWX in Washington, were the first area stations to conduct pioneering experimental broadcasts.

At five stations, dozens of Metro users are on waiting lists to get the monthly reserved parking stickers from parking contractor Penn Parking, which is based in Baltimore.
As Washington's suburbs have sprawled ever outward and as women have entered the work force in unprecedented numbers, the appetite for parking spaces at Metro stations has grown insatiable, and the transit agency cannot keep up.
Metro now sets aside about 1,800 reserved spaces for which commuters pay a monthly premium -- a program so popular that there's waiting list at some stations.

 Northwest Herald - Online
WASHINGTON – Eleven Illinois counties in the Chicago and St. Louis areas are expected to be on a federal list naming places that violate or contribute to violations of a new, more protective smog standard, state officials said Wednesday.
Counties listed will be put into one of six categories, ranging from "marginal" to "extreme" noncompliance, that require action such as vehicle inspections and maintenance programs, senior U.S. EPA officials said.
McMurray said the Illinois EPA's understanding is that exactly the same territory in the Chicago metro area is being covered under the eight-hour standard as a "non-attainment" area in terms of noncompliance, as it was under the one-hour standard.

Crowded Metro Looks at Short-Term Fixes
Most striking in yesterday's presentation was a proposed Metro map linking Northern Virginia seamlessly with the northern leg of the Green Line in Prince George's County, via a track across the Potomac near the 14th Street bridge and through downtown.
Metro officials have predicted for years that as ridership grew, so would problems in the system's core, where just 19 percent of the total 103 miles of track carries more than half of all passengers.
Although Metro has traditionally avoided bus routes that duplicate subway connections, another major piece of the plan would add express buses between the suburbs and downtown.

Center on Budget and Policy Priorities
Craig's List of Washington, DC is fantastic for finding housing or used furniture, and is basically a large Classifieds bulletin board arranged according to categories.
Even cooler, however, is the metro rideguide (it can be accessed through the website's Getting Around Section or at http://rideguide.wmata.com/), which allows you to plug in a place of departure and destination, and then shows you the many ways that will get you from Point A to Point B using public transportation.
Most venues list their monthly events and specials, such as happy hours, concerts or parties, in the City Paper, so pretty much if something is happening in DC it is in the City Paper.
