Outlaw - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An outlaw, a person living the lifestyle of outlawry, meaning literally "outside of the law." In the common law of England, a judgment declaring someone an outlaw was one of the harshest penalties in the legal system.
The outlaw is familiar to contemporary readers as an archetype in Western movies, depicting the lawless expansionism period of the United States in the late 19th century.
The Western outlaw is typically a criminal who operates from a base in the wilderness, and opposes, attacks or disrupts the fragile institutions of new settlements.

Western (genre) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Westerns are art works – films, literature, television and radio shows, sculpture (particularly that by Frederic Remington), and paintings – devoted to telling stories set in the 19th Century American West (and sometimes Mexico or the Australian outback, during the same time period), with the setting ocassional portrayed in a romanticized light.
Westerns, by definition, are set in the Western United States, generally between the 1860's and 1900.
An offshoot of the western genre is the "post-apocalyptic" western, in which a future society, struggling to rebuild after a major catastrophe, is portrayed in a manner very similar to the 19th century frontier.

 GreenCine | Westerns
Westerns have always centered on the classic American story itself, that of taming the land (and, occasionally, the part where white people "conquered" natives), of overcoming hardships, of the frontier spirit.
Westerns have always centered on a hero who is a man of few words.
While Westerns started to become a rarer occurrence in America by the late 1950s, in Europe, they were exceedingly popular, particularly in one country that has always been fascinated by the American West's mythology and, by association, the Western.

 Westerns Films
Westerns are often set on the American frontier during the last part of the 19th century (1865-1900) following the Civil War, in a geographically western (trans-Mississippi) setting with romantic, sweeping frontier landscapes or rugged rural terrain.
The western film genre often portrays the conquest of the wilderness and the subordination of nature, in the name of civilization, or the confiscation of the territorial rights of the original inhabitants of the frontier.
Western heroes are often local lawmen or enforcement officers, ranchers, army officers, cowboys, territorial marshals, or a skilled, fast-draw gunfighter.

 American Outlaws Movie Review
American Outlaws is an attempt at a western for the 21st century.
American Outlaws is a very, and I do mean VERY, loose interpretation of the story of Jesse James, portrayed here by Colin Farrell.
As perhaps the most famous outlaw of the old west, there have been many stories written about Jesse James and his gang, so over the years it has become a bit unclear whether he was a good guy, a Robin Hood type character, or just a cold blooded killer.

Images - The Western: An Overview
The iconography of the Western is the largest and richest of all the film genres, and Hollywood has burned it into the minds of moviegoers from Dodge City to Timbuktu.
At the heart of the Western, and not to be underestimated, was physical action--runaway stagecoaches, Indian raids, bank holdups, posse pursuits, and cattle stampedes.
The Western provided infinite variety on a relatively small stable of situations and plots, with conflicts often growing out of several archetypal situations: ranchers vs. farmers (Shane and Man Without a Star), Indians vs. settlers (The Searchers and Hondo), and outlaws vs. civilization (My Darling Clementine and High Noon).
