Female prisoners still remain a minuscule fraction of the population -- just under 1 percent of the U.S. female population -- but their numbers are growing.
Nearly 1,300 female offenders are serving time in Wisconsin's prison system, a number that has increased fivefold in the past 15 years, according to the state Department of Corrections.
As hard as prison is, being released also can be terrifying for women, said Debbie Lassiter, of the Convergence Resource Center, a Milwaukee-based nonprofit agency that opened in 2004 to help female inmates transition into society upon their release.

In the decennial census, prisoners are counted where they are incarcerated, and many federal and state funding streams are tied to census population counts.
In Wisconsin, the number of state prisoners who were housed in other states (known as interstate transfers) caused concern because these prisoners would be counted in the decennial census in the states where they were incarcerated.

The state has paid $145,000 to settle a lawsuit brought by a University of Wisconsin-Madison employee who claimed she was passed over for a job after she criticized school policy.

The study found that the recidivism rate among prisoners released unconditionally was virtually the same as that among "mandatory parolees," or prisoners for whom parole is part of a fixed sentence: 62 percent of the former and 61 percent of the latter were re-arrested at least once within two years.
PLN is aimed at prisoners and their friends and loved ones on the outside, with the goal of helping prisoners and their supporters organize themselves to have a voice, and to be a progressive force in developing a public policy debate around the issue of crime and punishment.

What follows is an alphabetical list of the 15th Wisconsin soldiers who, according to military records, were taken prisoner during the Battle of Pickett's Mill in the State of Georgia (often mistakenly referred to as the Battle of New Hope Church or the Battle of Dallas).
Believed by his comrades to have died of his wounds while a Prisoner of War, but he actually survived his wounds and prison, and was released April 15, 1865, at end of the war.
Was transferred from there to prisons near Charleston and Florence, South Carolina, and then Charlotte, North Carolina, where he escaped twice, the second time successfully.
