A UNESCO World Heritage Site is a specific site (such as a forest, mountain range, lake, desert, building, complex, or city) that has been nominated for the international World Heritage program administered by UNESCO.
The program was founded with the Convention Concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage that was adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO on 16 November 1972.
As of 2004, a total of 788 sites have been included in the list (611 cultural, 154 natural and 23 mixed properties in 134 States Parties).

The World Heritage Committee, in charge of inscribing sites as well as of examining the state of conservation of those already included on the List, has been created by the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, which was adopted by UNESCO in 1972.
The World Heritage Committee is also in charge of the List of World Heritage in Danger, conceived to draw the attention of governments and public opinion on the need to protect sites that are particularly threatened.
The World Heritage Committee examines reports on the state of conservation of listed sites and requires the States Parties to take corrective measures when they are not managed properly.

UNESCO seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity through the implementaiton of the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (1972), often referred to as the World Heritage Convention.
The World Heritage List includes cultural heritage sites, natural heritage sites and mixed sites which conform to criteria elucidated by the Operational Guidelines of the World Heritage Convention.
There are five sites inscribed on the World Heritage List in Asia and the Pacific region.

Among the damaged cultural sites are the old town of Galle and its fortifications in Sri Lanka; and, in India, the Mahabalipuram in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.
The wrath of nature on a cultural heritage site was also seen on Dec. 26, 2003 -- a year before the Asian tsunami struck - at the rich archaeological remains of the Iranian city of Bam, where 26,000 lost their lives in a huge earthquake in the area.

One of the sites thought likely to be placed on the list of culturally or naturally important places this year is the Iranian city of Bam.
But Unesco has warned that another of Iran's ancient sites, the city of Isfahan, could be removed from the World Heritage list and branded "world heritage in danger" because of "uncontrolled urbanisation".
Unesco would not release the full list of 48 sites - saying the successful applicants would be named over the course of the conference, which lasts until 7 July.

The manuscripts are now found in many sites throughout the world including the National Library of China, The British Library (not the British Museum!), the Biblitheque Nationale in Paris and the Institute of Oriental Studies in St. Petersburg.
The Peking Man site at Zhoukoudian on the outskirts of Beijing was discovered in the 1920s and has yielded prolific fossil remains of the archaic human species Homo erectus, dated to approximately 500,000 years ago.
