  World War II
World War II World War II was the most extensive and costly armed conflict in the history of the world, involving the great majority of the world's nations, being fought simultaneously in several major theatres, and costing approximately 55.5 million lives (see below).
The war was fought mainly between an alliance of the British Commonwealth, France, the United States, the Soviet Union, and China—collectively known as the Allies; and the Axis Powers, an alliance between Germany, Italy, and Japan.
After the war, many high-ranking Germans were prosecuted for war crimes, as well as the mass murder of the Holocaust committed mainly on the area of General Government, in the Nuremberg trials.

SOUTH AFRICAN AIR ACES OF WORLD WAR II - South African Military History Society
This is because many fine pilots never became aces, either through lack of opportunities or sheer circumstance, or because they were killed or injured before they could build up their scores.
As Christopher Shores and Clive Williams point out in their comprehensive, albeit inaccurate book, "Aces High" (Neville Spearman, 1966), "to judge a fighter pilot purely by the number of his victories is as unfair as to judge an angler purely by the number of fish he catches".
During the course of World War II the ace pilots claimed something over 60 per cent of all confirmed victories, though during the early years of the year this percentage was considerably higher.
