A firearm is a device that can be used as a weapon that fires either single or multiple projectiles propelled at high velocity by the gases produced through rapid, confined burning of a propellant.
The direct ancestor of the firearm is the fire-lance, which was a spear with a gunpowder-fueled flamethrower attached next to the spearhead; shrapnel was sometimes placed in the barrel so that it would fly out together with the flames.
The earliest evidence of a gunpowder weapon anywhere in the world is probably the illustration of such a flamethrower on a tenth-century painted silk banner from northwest China; the earliest literary evidence of the use of fire-lances records that Chinese soldiers used fire-lances against the Jurchens at the siege of De'an in 1132.

After the war the MP40 was still the standard submachine gun of the Israeli army and was often used in the Palestinian area.
Though not with official sanction from the Germans, many countries involved in World War II developed submachine guns which had a similar form to the MP40 (with a folding shoulder stock, and the magazine holder being used as a second handgrip).
However, by the end of the war it was being issued to entire assault platoons, as submachineguns were found superior to rifles in close combat and required less training to use effectively.

Although not widely fielded until World War I, early machine guns were being used by the military in the late 19th century (e.g., the Gatling gun).
Some magazines, such as those of the Garand are internal to the firearm, and are loaded by using a clip, which is a device that looks like a rail holding the ammunition by the rim of the case.

Most modern firearms (with the notable exception of smoothbore shotguns) have rifled barrels to impart spin to the projectile for improved flight stability.
The term gun is often used as a synonym for firearm, but in specialist use has a restricted sense—referring only to an artillery piece with a relatively high muzzle velocity, such as a field gun, a tank gun, an anti-tank gun, or a gun used in the delivery of naval gunfire.
According to international conventions governing the Laws of War, small arms are defined (with some exceptions) as firearms which fire a projectile not in excess of 15 mm (0.60 inches) in diameter.

Many modern computer and video games, in order to achieve a reasonable degree of realism, are designed as such that their firearms are similar to or copies of existing and widely used munitions.
The purpose is to both have a categorized cross-reference for video games and the firearms depicted in them but also to relieve the videogame and firearm articles respectively of the often lengthy lists.

MP44 - Index des armes du monde
Sturmgewehr 44 (StG44) was an assault rifle developed in Nazi Germany during World War II and was the first of its kind to see major deployment.
The receiver and trigger housing with pistol grip were made from steel stampings, which were attached to the barrel assembly on a hinge, allowing the weapon to be "folded open" for quick disassembly and cleaning.
Generally accepted as the world's first assault rifle, the StG44's effect on post-war arms design was wide-ranging, as evidenced by Mikhail Kalashnikov's famous AK-47, and ultimately in the U.S. and its variants.

The MG34 was used as the primary infantry machine gun during the 1930s, and remained as the primary tank and aircraft defensive weapon.
It was intended that it would be replaced in infantry service by the related MG42, but there were never enough of the new design to go around, and MG34s soldiered on in all roles until the end of World War II.
